Our Lady of Calvary Grotto - Asueyi

History
Our Lady of Calvary Grotto Asueyi

The idea of establishing Our Lady of Calvary Grotto, was conceived by Op. Matthew Kwadwo Okrah, the then church president of Asueyi Catholic Church. In 1966, when Op. Okrah participated in the annual diocesan pilgrimage at Buoho in the Ashanti Region under Bishop Bronk of Kumasi, he expressed his desire to Rev. Fr. Huismann, SMA, the then parish priest of St. Paul's Parish, Techiman. Having inspected the place, Fr. Huismann informed the discovery to Bishop Bronk.

In 1970, Fr. Huismann, Op. Matthew Kwadwo Okrah and the Church executives of Asueyi went the Jama Traditional Council to request for the site. Having acquired the site, they began developing the place through manual labor and support from Fr. Huismann. They faced initial challenges from some o the local people who had their shrines and gods at the area. Howver, through prayer, fasting, resilience and hard work, they managed to construct an Altar at the now Marian Shrine.

When Fr. Huismann was transferred from Techiman, the development of the place was halted until in November 1984, when Fr. Otmar Auwinger, SVD, visited the site and decided to continue to develop the Grotto. He built Stations of the Cross on the Mountain tops and named the place 'Holy Cross of Calvary Grotto'. The first parish pilgrimage to the place was held on 14th September 1984 on the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. With the support of the priests at Techiman, the church societies planted trees and one George Anane, and artisan from Berekum, was contracted to build the Stations of the Cross with cement in 1989. When the Late Bishop Owusu visited the place, the Diocese of Sunyani adopted the place as a diocesan shrine and pilgrimage center and renamed the place “Our Lady of the Holy Cross of Calvary Grotto”. The First Diocesan Pilgrimage took place on the Feast of Assumption, 15th August, 1987.

In 1991, Rev. Fr. Charles Gyasi Boateng (a.k.a Kofi Yesu) was appointed the first rector of the Grotto. When Fr. Charles was transferred, the Grotto became an outstation of the then St. Paul's Pasrih until Rev. Fr. William Kyere was appointed as rector in January 2006.

When the Diocese of Techiman was created in December 2007, Rev. Fr. John Kofi Brobbey was appointed as Rector of the Grotto, and was succeeded by the current Rector, Rev. Fr. Peter Kwame Yeboah in 2013. His Excellency, Most Rev. Leon B. Kalenga, the former Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana visited the Grotto in 2012, during the Silver Jubilee celebration of the Grotto.
